Who wants impeachment?

Lots of people, apparently. According to the results on an American Research Group, Inc. poll reported 07/06/07, 54% of the public support starting impeachment proceedings against Dark Lord Cheney. While 45% favor starting them against Dear Leader Bush.

Among Democrats, the respective percentages are 76% and 69%. Among independents, 51% and 50%.

The Democrats have traditionally called themselves "the people's party". And there have definitely been times they've acted like it. They're even lurching in that direction this year.

But it's time for them to lurch a little harder on impeachment of Cheney and Bush. At the very minimum, a House indictment over the WMD fraud, the torture policy, the Plame outing, the signals intelligence leak to Iran (which was far more serious an intelligence breach than even the Plame leak), and various other misdeeds would establish an impeachment precedent.

The public sentiment for impeachment has reached this point without most of the Democratic leadership promoting the idea. In fact, they've mostly been cool to the idea. Like on the Iraq War, the public is way ahead of the Democratic leaders on this. The Democrats need to catch up quickly.
