New Hampshire primary

Clinton pulled out a win in New Hampshire! Chris Matthews will surely be rending his clothes with much gnashing of teeth.

The New York Times is reporting the following rankings with 95% of the vote reporting. On the Democratic side: Clinton 39%; Obama 36%; Edwards 17% Richardson 5%; Kucinich 1%. For the Republicans: Maverick McCain 37%; Romney 32%; the Huck 11%; Giuliani 9%; Paul 8%.

This gives us a real three-way race on the Democratic side with Clinton, Obama and Edwards. On the Republican side, it's likely going to be pretty much a fight among the great Maverick, darling of our "press corps", Romney, and the Huck.

Gloria Steinem apparently stirred up a little controversy - not the first time in her career she's done so - with an article on the day of the New Hampshire primary about sexism in the press coverage of Clinton's campaign, Women Are Never Front-Runners New York Times 01/08/08.

Robert Scheer picks up on Steinem's article in Playing the Class Card Truthdig.com 01/08/08. "What we need far more than a change in appearance is one of perspective," he writes, because "the George W. Bush administration engaged in class warfare for the rich with a vengeance that has left many Americans hurting, and we desperately need change to reverse that destructive course".

One thing clear out of the GOP race is that that race is blown wide open. McCain has momentum but he's going into states where he can't rely on independent voters. Romney is almost down for the count, but not quite. And he's got plenty of money to keep fighting as long as he wants. And then, oh yeah, Mike Huckabee. He's likely to win South Carolina next week. And he's ahead nationally. Some people think this leaves Rudy still in contention by default. Maybe but I really don't see it.
