McCain and Spain

Josh Marshall at TPM is working the story as a "gaffe," which I suppose it is. It has to do with an ambiguous statement he made and repeated in an interview in which a Spanish reporter was asking him about Hugo Chavez and other South America leaders.

When the reporter asked him about Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, he replied with a vague statement about how he would be willing to meet with anyone who shares American principles and would be willing to confront those who oppose us. Josh writes that "the way it's being interpreted in the Spanish press is that McCain got confused about the fact that Spain is a country in Europe, rather than a rogue state in Latin America."

That's how it strikes me, too. I think he just didn't know who Zapatero was when he was asked.
