Confederate "Heritage" Month 2009, April 29: Chuck Norris, neo-Confederate?

Chuck and the Huck

Yes, that Chuck Norris, the action-movie film star and active Mike Huckabee supporter during the 2008 Republican primaries.

In a regular column that appears under his name at WorldNetDaily.com, he writes, I may run for president of Texas 03/09/09.

Brad Hart comments on Norris' post at the American Creation blog in the ironically titled, Chuck Norris: American Patriot Extraordinaire 03/10/09

Chuck Norris On The Eve of Revolution? by Frederick Clarkson TalktoAction 03/10/09

Dana Houle talks about how problematic such rhetoric is and how closely it reflects the views of violent "Patriot movement" extremists in Chuck Norris and Glenn Beck Want to Cut-and-Run Daily Kos 03/10/09:

Chuck Norris is an entertainer, a buffoon, and probably isn't willing to do anything that will hurt his earning potential in C films, bad television shows and martial arts clinics. This is just a bunch of talk. But words can have consequences, and the fact that he's stewing this up with a hatemonger like Glenn Beck means it's not hard to imagine some deranged sorts taking this to be a call to violent action. Unchallenged, such talk also contributes to an environment where its seen as acceptable, normal, even desirable to talk about secession, violence against the government, and violence against innocents as an act against the government. The distance from rampant talk about violence against the government and nativist terrorism is not all that great. Just think back to Timothy McVeigh and Oklahoma City.
Certainly we can't assume that any kooky idea held by a candidate's supporter is also held by the candidate. But if Huckabee does in a future Presidential campaign associate himself so closely with Chuck Norris as he did in the last one, it's certainly worth questioning the Huck about just how friendly is may be to such neo-Confederate ideology and why.

And it's one more reminder of how prevalent neo-Confederate ideology is in today's authoritarian Republican Party.

Is it suprising that Glenn Beck thinks secession is a great idea? (Daily Beck by Digby, Hullabaloo blog 04/14/09.
