Jerry Brown declining a White House visit
Jerry Brown to Obama: I've got better things to do than meet with you on Thursday
I'm on a Jerry Brown roll today. I think this is significant. David Siders reports for the Sacramento Bee's Capital Alert, Jerry Brown busy with budget, will skip White House visit 11/29/2010.
Incoming governors were invited to the White House Thursday for a meeting with the President. It's not a exciting as a new Wikileaks revelation. But his spokesman Sterling Clifford said the reason was what the headline indicates, that he's too busy working on the budget disaster.
This is a calculated snub. The message is something along the lines of, if the White House is going to pursue Herbert Hoover economics and bound the national economy and California's economy and state budget by that kind of foolishness, don't expect that Democratic leaders in the states are going to be acting as photo-op props for you whenever you ask us to.
We've fortunately been spared so far from much if any speculation by our Pod Pundits on whether Jerry is considering another run at the White House. I strongly doubt that he is. But he also knows that the California Governor is almost by definition a heavyweight figure in his national party. And Jerry has to be dismayed by the downright conservative turn the Obama Administration is taking on the economy.
