Carlos Gardel stamp

Text from the US Postal Service "Latin Music Legends" stamp sheet:

A superb and evocative singer, Carlos Gardel (1890?-1935) was one of the most celebrated tango artists of all time. Raised in Argentina, Gardel helped popularize the tango in the United States, Europe, and Latin America through his performances and recordings. "The man with the tear in his voice" also achieved fame as one of the stars of the Spanish-language cinema.

Carlos Gardel's voice had a very unique timbre and his interpretive ability to deliver the precise emotion to a song has never been equaled. The genre known as the tango song truly benefited by having him as its foremost interpreter
He also did very well with songs composed in many different styles making him a truly international icon. Despite the technical limitations of his historic recordings any listener willing to overlook the scratchiness of the old 78s will eventually fall under his spell!
