Jonathan Chait has apparently not heard about the Republicans' widespread voter suppression effort aimed to reduce the African-American and Latino vote. At least that what it sounds like in Team Romney White-Vote Push: ‘This Is the Last Time Anyone Will Try to Do This’ New York 08/27/2012.
This seems to be another version of stodgy pundit commentary assuming that surely the Republicans will cool down and become more moderate after the 2012 election. The fact that it has gone that way for the last 20 years - arguably 40 years would be more like it - doesn't seem to phase them from coming up with the same idea again and again and pretending they're thinking something original.
Now if somehow can paint a plausible scenario of how the Republican Party might pull out of its current cycle of fanaticism, that would be an eye-catching piece!
Because I don't see any plausible scenario that leads there in the immediate future.
