Jesse y Joy, "Espacio

This is the song Jesse & Joy performed on the Latin Grammy program Thursday night, "Espacion Sideral". (See previous post.) They seem to be really talented, at least from my limited exposure to them.

Their style reminds me quite a bit of a young American folk duo, Johnny Irion and Sara Lee Guthrie. (Yes, she's Arlo's daughter and Woody's granddaughter.)

Jesse y Joy

I had never heard of this duo until Thursday night when I saw them perform on the Latin Grammy program. They also won the Latin Grammy for Mejor Nuevo Artista (Best New Artist). They are a brother-and-sister team in their early 20s from Mexico City. This video has them performing their song, "Ya No Quiero"; the first part shows them performing it with two guitars on some talk show and then a studio video version.

I don't quite know what style of music you would call this. Latino folk would do it for me. But it's pretty darn good, whatever you call it.

One of moderators of the program made a joke about being in Las Vegas for this show with all these Latinos, and a cleaning guy comes to his hotel room that can only speak English. So he told the clearning guy, "I-want-peace!" The cleaning guy pointed to the bathroom. (Hey, I thought it was pretty funny.)

The biggest hit of the event seemed to be the elaborate dance number put on Calle 13, a "reggaeton" duo from Puerto Rico. I also enjoyed seeing Miguel and Bimba Bosé perform "Como un Lobo", from his album of duets called Papito, which is great.
