The political-linguistic guru Robert Lakoff weighs in on the key aspect of the Republicans' phony outrage over anyone insulting the divine presence of our Saviour-General Petraeus, in The Senate Votes on Tropes and the Troops Huffington Post 09/20/07.
The Republicans are trying to establish their theme that anyone who criticizes Saviour-General Petraeus, at least so long as he's publicly and willingly defending the Cheney-Bush war policies, is attacking The Troops. I'm guessing they're doing this partly out of political strategy, partly out of ideology and partly out of habit.
Glenn Greenwald discusses a closely related subject, with a bitter comment added as an update specifically on so many Senate Democrats falling for the "bitch slap" maneuver on the General Petraeus Is Our Saviour resolution, The art of neoconservative innuendo Salon 09/20/07..
