Reso[lution] Condemning MoveOn Passes Overwhelmingly, With Lots Of Dems by Greg Sargent TPM Election Central 09/20/07.
All I can say is, what the hell were they thinking? If this were, say, 1983, there might be, maybe, the possibility that such a Republican stunt joined by the Dems could have been a moment that would result in increased "civility", that Holy Grail of High Broderism (at least for Democrats).
But those days are long gone. And for Democrats to vote for such a silly thing is a signal of weakness on the part of the Democrats. Not to mention foolishness.
Because the Reps have been calling you traitors for at least the last four years. And their partisan publicists have been doing it very actively since approximately 09/12/01. Though in today's Bircherized Republican Party, it can hardly be said to have started then. And they're going to keep doing it, you clowns! Especially since you fell for the "bitch slap" maneuver on this one.
The only way this makes even the remotest, vaguest kind of sense for Democrats today is if they plan to offer a whole series of resolutions now denouncing Rush Limbaugh, Mad Annie Coulter (author of Treason and highly popular Republican whackjob), Lou Dobbs, John Hagee and five or ten other high-profile loonies that promote bigotry, racism, lunatic theocracy, nativism and so forth. And demanding that Republicans join them in denouncing those outrages.
I'm back to my Rummy takeoff: you fight to end the war with Democratic Party you have, not the Democratic Party you would like to have, or that you might want. Except: Democratic voters have a big say in what kind of Democratic Party we will have at the end of 2008. We need to speak and vote very clearly on that matter.
